”I wish I was in London…I wish I saw the Queen”…A song of Roger Hodgson – most of you would remember ..There is almost a song for every occasion, don’t you think?!
But that is not my thing at the moment- it is more of ‘not being able to see or experience’ the London Fashion Week!!
Oh, I love London + Fashion. That is my ideal duo. Incredibly fascinating I would call it. Inseperable. Magnificent. Superb!. I have always loved fashion. Since my childhood. Apparently, I would put my beret slightly towards one side and wear it like a French lady when I was a kid… Mom has recently confessed that I had a talent & sense of style and would try to change people’s look and transform them to something else:) (of which I have some memories!:) ) I have always deeply suffered from why I haven’t had the chance to study fashion so I’m asking now why was I not then directed towards this passion?? I wish I had been recognised…
Still at a later stage, I could not get the University of my dreams out of my mind!! While I was studying English Language and Literature I was still reading & dreaming about Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London. I had to go there….I was fascinated by Huseyin Caglayan’s (Hussein Chalayan) show at that time. He was a student at the same school! Wooowww!! Yes, this school was ‘my school’..
I kept dreaming and dreaming. I had lost the chance to do an BA of course.. Still I was dreaming. I was creating my own style and was told that people liked the way I dressed. Was this helpful for me to go? Of course not. But I loved to dress. But not wearing some designer’s clothes. That is something else. I loved to dress for myself and what I created or combined for myself – I loved it. Full stop.
If you really want something, you do it in the end. It took my some 9 years to go to the school I wanted. Ha ha ha; what a success! :p Yes, that is true. I did not give up. After I completed my studies I started teaching and some years passed and then applied for another course but at the CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS. I had to go and I finally did
It was like postponing your youth & dream so I was on cloud nine to catch up with what I had missed!…So many things to explore, so many things to read and see…I absolutely loved Saint Martins. It definitely is a privilege to study there. I enjoyed this MA very much too even though it was not fashion design…I did the most I could and had a great project to complete; quite creative. And it was fun, too. Even though I spent most of the time at Charing Cross Street (with fashion students) rather than Southampton Row – I was fascinated by every aspect of the school, I liked anything related to it. I felt I belonged there!
Enough of it and me, let’s get back to the London Fashion week Vibe !
Now you can understand why I love this stuff so much. Having lived in London for almost 5 years my heart is still there. It beats a lot whenever I think about the Fashion Week. Not only the great designers are a matter of interest but streets full of style & colour, too! Anything from any taste for everyone. Surprising, pleasing, fun and crazy. Whatever of our liking!
How I wish I was there…
Thanks to technology, you can follow things even if you are not there. Yes, it is not the same thing, I agree, but better than nothing!! And for someone who has seen and felt it already, it does have almost the same impact anyway!
What do we have this year, let’s see….
I have always liked Dame Vivienne Westwood. Not only was it because I was a punk when I was young and listened to her companion John Lydon (the Sex Pistols) but also because her anarchic, unconventional style appealed to me. Since I was a teen I have always been fond of military clothes, boots and rebellious styles. I like her DIY & environmental views, too..
Alexander McQueen…Classy. As usual, embroidery, details, somewhat fairy. Dark & romantic…Suits the stage..From my school :))
Temperly. Oh how lovely her design is, especially this year. I loved the colours- wanted summer to come immediately. Have one of those dresses and walk along the beach. That’s it !!!! The colour match is amazing and the print likewise…some darker dresses have a gypsy-like touch.
Would it not have been lovely to have her show in open-air: Southbank or Tate Modern??
Anyway… have a look yourself
